640 20. Creating Video Output
4K UHD Video
4K is the latest iteration of HD video: Ultra-High Definition. 4K video can be
captured using a wide range of DSLRs, mirrorless cameras and camcorders,
and is quickly becoming the standard resolution for most new TVs.
Additionally, YouTube and Vimeo now support 4K uploads.
The name “4K” refers to the size of the video frame being “about 4000 pixels
wide”. Currently, 4K has a couple of variants, but for the most part, video
dimensions are typically 3840 pixels wide, by 2160 pixels tall. It’s also
common to see 4K listed as “2160p” (just like HD is referred to as 1080p).
Naturally, with such a large surface area, 4K features extremely high quality
video.
To put 4K into perspective, let’s compare 4K to HD and standard video in
two ways:
First, when it comes to basic surface area, 4K is twice the size of 1080p HD
video, 3x larger 720p HD, and 4.5 times larger when compared to DVD.
